Eligibility & Qualification

Expert answers to eligibility & qualification questions

Who qualifies for the ECO4 free boiler scheme?

You may qualify if you receive qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, etc.), have a household income under £31,000, or are considered vulnerable. Your property must have an EPC rating of D-G and your current boiler should be over 7 years old or inefficient.

What benefits automatically qualify me for a free boiler?

Qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, Pension Credit (Guarantee or Savings), Income Support, Income-based JSA, Income-related ESA, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Child Benefit (with income thresholds), and Disability Living Allowance.

Can I get a free boiler if I don't receive benefits?

Yes, through ECO4 Flex you may qualify with a household income under £31,000 (for 1-2 people) or £38,000 (for 3+ people). You may also qualify if you have certain health conditions that make you vulnerable to cold weather, or live in social housing.

Do I qualify if I'm a tenant?

Yes, both private and social housing tenants can qualify. You'll need landlord permission, a tenancy agreement with at least 12 months remaining, and must be responsible for heating bills. Your landlord cannot charge you for the installation.

What if my property has an EPC rating of A, B, or C?

Properties with high EPC ratings (A-C) typically don't qualify for ECO4 as they're already considered energy efficient. However, you may still qualify if you have specific vulnerabilities or through other government schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Can I apply if my boiler is less than 7 years old?

Generally, boilers under 7 years old don't qualify unless they're broken beyond economic repair or are highly inefficient (non-condensing). The scheme prioritizes homes with older, inefficient heating systems that will provide the greatest energy savings.
